James Alfred Wilkins, 66, went home to be with the Lord peacefully in his sleep on November 2, 2025. Born on August 25, 1959 in Independence, Louisiana. (Tangipahoa Parrish) He was the 3rd of 7 children born to his now late Mother Elmease Walker Wilkins Coleman.
Loved ones cherishing his memory: His Aunt, Alva Mae Walker. Siblings: David P. Wilkins, Jerri Wilkins Amos (Benny), of Baton Rouge, La. Jerry Wilkins (Marlo) of Jacksonville, Florida, Julia Cook (Ron) of Baton Rouge, La. and Sallye Renee Wilkins Louis (Paul) of Fordoche, La. James attended Istrouma High school in a Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was a strong athlete participating in track and football. He later developed a passion for martial arts, biking and tennis.
He went to Job corp at 17 years of age where he became and skilled painter and contractor for over 20 years—teaching many of his nephews the trade he loved so much. His patience, steady guidance, and willingness to lend a hand made a lasting impact on everyone who learned from him.
James is survived by his (3) daughters Nikita Abiwon (Nicholas) of Marietta, Ga. Rashida Phelps (Larry) of Northport, Fl. and Kenya Rubin (Tevin) of Sarasota, Fl. and (7) grandchildren: Nova Velasquez, Empress Phelps, Josiah Abiwon, Joel Velasquez, Amayah Abiwon, Malea Ewer and Aurora Abiwon, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
He will be loved and remembered for his big heart, quiet strength, bellowing laughter and the love he shared freely with those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elmease Walker Coleman, Albert Ray Coleman and Brother Charles Walker, Cousin Stephanie Miranda Walker, Niece Emma Deborah Jones, and Nephew Patrick Lamont Bailey.
