There are some individuals whose lives quietly leave an indelible mark upon everyone blessed enough to know them. Mr. Elijah Carey was one such man—a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, faithful servant of God, and friend to many. On Thursday, July 2, 2026, God, in His infinite wisdom, called His faithful servant home, bringing to a close a life that was rich in love, service, faith, and unwavering dedication to family.

Born on January 27, 1943, to the late John and Ellen Carey, Elijah was raised with strong values of faith, hard work, compassion, and integrity. Those principles became the foundation upon which he built a remarkable life and legacy.

For over 30 years, Elijah faithfully served as a chef at Piccadilly, where his culinary talents and warm personality made him admired by coworkers and patrons alike. He believed that preparing a meal was another way of caring for others, and he took pride in serving with excellence.

Outside of his profession, Elijah embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. He found joy in spending time with family, sharing laughter, and creating lasting memories. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting Pearl George Outreach Center, where he enjoyed fellowship and meaningful companionship. He also cherished attending church services, listening to the preached Word of God, and sharing in Christian fellowship.

His spiritual journey was an important part of his life. Elijah worshipped at the Church of God in Christ and later attended Greater St. James Baptist Church and was a member of Abundant Life Christian Center, where he remained steadfast in his faith. His relationship with God was reflected in his gentle spirit, humble demeanor, and willingness to encourage others. He truly sought to live an abundant life rooted in Christ.

Above all else, Elijah treasured his family. He was the devoted husband of Mary Ann Hawkins Carey, whose love and companionship blessed his life. Together they built a family grounded in love, faith, and unity.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory: his loving wife, Mary Ann Hawkins Carey; three devoted daughters, Sandra Steward, Johnnella (Efraim) Quinones, and Cretta Sugg; two beloved stepdaughters, Tonecia Hawkins Augustus (George) and Shalond Hawkins; one stepson, Melvin (Shawnda) Hawkins; and a host of grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy to his life, including Brittany Camon, Ebony (Sheldon) Wilson, Joshua Williams, Johnathan (Tenishia) Mitchell, Jacoby (Kiara Byrd) Mitchell, Timothy (Quierra) Williams, Terrell Williams, Taylor Williams, along with other cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly called him Grandpa; his brothers, Roland Carey and Robert Carey; his beloved sister, Glady (Michael) Sewell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, dear friends, church family, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness and unwavering love.

Awaiting him in eternal glory were his beloved parents, John and Ellen Carey; his sisters, Cherry Ann Carey and Marguerite Carey; his brother, Cleveland Carey; and his sons, Josiah Mitchell and Elijah Carey, Jr. Though separated for a season, we rejoice in the blessed assurance that they are reunited in the presence of the Lord.

Elijah's life was a beautiful testimony of faith, perseverance, humility, and unconditional love. Though his earthly journey has ended, the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he freely shared will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy will continue through every life he influenced, every prayer he offered, every meal he prepared, and every act of kindness he extended.

Today, while our hearts mourn his absence, we celebrate a life that was well-lived and a soul that has entered into eternal rest. We thank God for the privilege of knowing him and take comfort in the promise that one day, through faith in Jesus Christ, we shall meet again.

A life measured not by years alone, but by love given, faith demonstrated, and lives forever changed, will never truly end. Though your voice is now silent and your chair sits empty, your love remains alive in every heart you touched. Rest peacefully, knowing your work on earth is complete and your heavenly reward has been secured. Until we meet again, you will be forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
