Alex "Sonnie" Hartley, Sr.

October 31, 1941 — August 29, 2023

New Orleans

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alex "Sonnie" Hartley, Sr., a cherished soul who brought warmth and light into the lives of those around him. Born on October 31, 1941, in St. Joseph, Louisiana, Sunny's radiant spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of crossing his path. He touched countless lives through his love, kindness, and unwavering optimism.

Sonnie's journey on this earthly plane came to an end on August 29, 2023, in his beloved hometown of New Orleans, leaving behind a legacy that will be forever cherished. Although our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find solace in the memories of a life well-lived and a man who truly epitomized the meaning of joy.

Sonnie was much more than just a name; it was a nickname that perfectly encapsulated his vibrant personality. Always wearing a smile and radiating warmth, he had an unparalleled ability to brighten even the darkest corners of our lives. His laugh was contagious and his zest for life was infectious; he had an uncanny knack for turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.

A man deeply devoted to his family and friends, Sonnie treasured every moment spent in their company. His parents, Dave and Henrietta Hartley, held a special place in his heart. Their love nurtured him into the extraordinary individual he became.

Though mourning his departure with heavy hearts today, we take solace in the knowledge that Sonnie's legacy is carried forward by five incredible children: Alex Hartley Jr., Darlisa Hartley, Patrick Hartley, Kimberly Coleman, and Jonathan Paul. Each one reflects their father's light in their own unique ways and will ensure that his presence continues to be felt by future generations. In addition he is survived by a host of brothers and sisters; thriteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren; his companion, Ceclita Cornish and a best friend, Alvin Hayes.

In addition to being a loving father, Sonnie was a dear friend to many – a pillar of support during times of distress and a beacon of hope in moments of darkness. His genuine compassion and unwavering loyalty made him a confidant to all who sought his counsel.

Sonnie's passion for life extended beyond the warmth of personal relationships. He had a deep appreciation for the arts, finding solace in music, literature, and nature. He had an innate talent for capturing the beauty of the world, preserving memories that would stand as testaments to his artist's eye.

To celebrate Sonnie's extraordinary life, a Memorial Gathering will be held on September 9, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the S.L. Booker Family Celebration Center located at 1771 Lobdell Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70806. This symbolic gathering will provide an opportunity for family and friends to pay tribute to a man who touched their lives in immeasurable ways.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, let us remember Sonnie not with sadness but with gratitude for the time we were blessed to spend in his presence. May his undying spirit continue to shine brightly in our hearts and inspire us to honor his memory through kindness, love, and an unwavering zest for life.

Rest in eternal peace, dear Sonnie. In the tapestry of our lives, you will forever remain an irreplaceable thread—a source of light that will guide us through even the darkest days.

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. Revelation 14:13 KJV
